Officially, Thorp is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kittitas County, Washington, United States, with a population of 232 in 2020. The town is named after Fielden Mortimer Thorp, the first sheriff of what was then Ferguson County, who settled in the Kittitas Valley (in Thorp of all places) in the 1860's.
Unofficially, Thorp is famous for the antique mall, fruit stand and the biggest American flag in the Eastern Cascades*. Other world famous spots include the Thorp Mill, the coolest little art gallery and music venue called Punch Projects, an exhibit dedicated to Mel's Hole and the Palouse to Cascades/John Wayne/Iron Horse/whatever Trail.
Is Thorp in Upper County or Lower County? It depends. I divide Upper and Lower County by where I stop deathgripping my steering wheel in the winter or where it dawns on me that my choices are go back home or commit to I-90 weekend traffic. Both are around Thorp. At the end of the day, Thorp does what Thorp wants. Go Tigers!
*This is an allegation, not fact. In case you haven't noticed, its windy here and that flag is a sight to behold. Though, I would bet its the biggest weathervane in the East Cascades and the inspiration for all of those ridiculous Ronald-Reagan-on-a-velociraptor memes.
